8 strange facts about soccer

1. The highest scoring soccer game was 149-0!

undefinedYou’re probably wondering how a soccer team could be so bad that they let 149 goals be scored, but the truth is it was a form of protest. The event occurred in 2002 after a 2-2 draw between rival teams Stade Olympique de L’emyrne, or SOE, and AS Adema of Madagascar, which resulted in the referees awarding a penalty causing SOE to lose the game.

What did football referees use before whistles?

Football officials used the bladder of an elk before whistles were invented. It would make a sputtering noise similar to that of a struggling engine trying to turn. This practice ended when referees continuously got sick from the infectious diseases that would come out of the bladder.

How are soccer Balls made

  1. The Bladder and Lining

    • Inside a soccer ball is something called a bladder, which holds air. Bladders are made from either butyl or latex, depending on the quality of the soccer ball. The highest quality balls have butyl bladders, which are more expensive than latex but hold air longer. To make the bladder, the butyl or latex is carefully heated, then poured into a mold. Once cool, the round, flat bladder is removed and set aside.

Modern history of football

Modern History of Soccer: 18th Century onwards
In 1815, a major development took place that made soccer popular in Universities, Colleges and Schools. The popular English School and Eton College came forth with a set of rules, known as the Cambridge Rules. Football was segregated into two groups; some colleges and schools opted for Rugby rules that allowed tripping, shin kicking and also carrying the ball. These rules were exclusively prohibited as per the Cambridge rules.

The Early History Of Football

The Ancient Greeks and Romans are known to have played many ball games, some of which involved the use of the feet. The Roman game harpastum is believed to have been adapted from a Greek team game known as "ἐπίσκυρος" (Episkyros) or "φαινίνδα" (phaininda), which is mentioned by a Greek playwright, Antiphanes (388–311 BC) and later referred to by the Christian theologian Clement of Alexandria (c.150-c.215 AD). These games appear to have resembled rugby football. The Roman politician Cicero (106–43 BC) describes the case of a man who was killed whilst having a shave when a ball was kicked into a barber's shop. Roman ball games already knew the air-filled ball, the follis.
